Self-Serve Event Broker Service Upgrades in Solace Cloud

Upgrading to newer event broker service releases allows you to adopt new features and to modernize your event broker services.

Solace makes maintenance releases available for event broker services with Long Term Support (LTS) release versions during their two year support phase. Additionally, you can upgrade from any release, including a Rolling release, to any higher version release that was released after the date of your current version, and while your current version is still within its active support period.

LTS releases receive maintenance releases to address product and vulnerability issues. Solace recommends upgrading to maintenance releases as they become available. You must upgrade from an LTS release to a new LTS or Rolling release before its support period ends.

Rolling releases update through version upgrades rather than maintenance patches. If you are using a Rolling release, you must upgrade to a higher version release, released after your currently installed version to:

  • protect the platform against new security threats
  • address critical issues
  • use more recent event broker service versions when the full support period expires

When new versions are available for your event broker services, you can trigger your own event broker service upgrades. Self-serve upgrades allow you to upgrade an event broker service to a newer version whenever you are ready, without needing to Contact Solace to schedule the upgrade.

Your event broker services show their eligibility for upgrades in the Cloud Console. You may also receive notification in the Cloud Console and by email when new event broker service versions are ready. For more information see Determining Upgrade Eligibility for an Event Broker Service.

If your event broker service is eligible for an upgrade, you can trigger the upgrade using the Cloud Console or the REST API for Solace Cloud. For more information, see Performing Self-Serve Event Broker Service Upgrades.

You can view information about your event broker service upgrades and maintenance windows. For more information, see Viewing Information About Upgrades and Maintenance Activities.

Considerations for Self-Serve Event Broker Service Upgrades

Here are some considerations when performing self-serve event broker service upgrades using the Cloud Console or REST API for Solace Cloud:

Determining Upgrade Eligibility for an Event Broker Service

You can determine whether an upgrade is eligible for an event broker service when you:

  • receive an email from Solace indicating an upgrade is available

  • receive a system notification indicating upgrades are available

  • see a New versions are available statement in the Upgrades section of the Status page of an event broker service.

  • see a caution symbol indicating a revoked event broker service version in the following locations:

    • On the Service page in Cluster Manager:

      • in the list view, next to the version number of an event broker service

      • in the card view, next to the other icons, on the bottom-right corner of an event broker service card

    • On the Status page for an event broker service: A banner appears between the usage meters and the event broker service information.

  • request eligibility using the REST API for Solace Cloud. For more information, see Checking Availability of a Self-Serve Event Broker Service Upgrade Using the REST API

Performing Self-Serve Event Broker Service Upgrades

You have the choice of upgrading your event broker services immediately if space exists in the upgrade queue, or scheduling your event broker service upgrade using a maintenance window.

In the Cloud Console you use the Schedule Upgrade form to perform both immediate and schedule upgrades. For more information, see Performing Self-Serve Upgrades for an Event Broker Service Using the Cloud Console.

You can also use the REST API for Solace Cloud to perform immediate or scheduled event broker service upgrades. For more information, see Upgrading Event Broker Services Using the REST API for Solace Cloud.
