High-Availability Switchover for Event Broker Services

High-availability event broker services have two messaging nodes: an active node, and a backup node. You can perform an HA switchover for your event broker service, causing the active messaging node to change: the active node becomes the backup node, and the backup node becomes the active node. You can perform an HA switchover to test the Messaging Connectivity of client applications in a simulated failure of the primary node, or to test installation and synchronization of server certificates for bridges, ensuring the correct certificate is installed on both messaging nodes.

For more information about HA event broker services, see High Availability in PubSub+ Cloud.

Before performing an HA switchover for an event broker service, review the Considerations for Performing a Messaging Node Switchover.

Considerations for Performing a Messaging Node Switchover

Here are some considerations when performing an HA switchover for your event broker service:

  • You must have the Administrator or Mission Control Manager role to perform an HA switchover.

  • You cannot perform an HA switchover while other infrastructure requests are in progress. Infrastructure requests include event broker service upgrades, cluster upgrades, event broker service scale ups, and other infrastructure requests.

  • The system performs validation checks before and after the HA switchover occurs:

    • Pre-switchover validations ensure the event broker service and its messaging nodes are in a good state. If the pre-switchover validation fails, the switchover cannot proceed. If this situation occurs, please Contact Solace.

    • Post-switchover validations ensure the event broker service and its messaging nodes have switched their messaging states and the service is running properly.

  • The HA switchover process, including pre and post-checks, takes approximately 15 minutes. You cannot make any additional configuration changes to the event broker service while the HA switchover is occurring.

  • The switchover causes a momentary loss of Messaging Connectivity as the messaging nodes of the HA event broker service switch states.

Performing a Messaging Node Switchover

You can perform a messaging node switchover for an HA event broker service from the Cloud Console. To perform a messaging node switchover for your HA event broker service, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the PubSub+ Cloud Console if you have not done so yet. The URL to access the Cloud Console differs based on your authentication scheme. For more information, see Logging In to the PubSub+ Cloud Console.

  2. On the navigation bar, select Cluster Manager .
  3. Select the event broker service that you want to configure. If the event broker service is not listed, make sure you have the right environment selected. For more information, see Selecting Environments.
  4. On the Service Details page, click the Manage tab.
  5. On the Management Settings menu, select System Configuration.
  6. On the High-Availability Switchover tile, click Switch Active Broker.
  7. On the Start High Availability Switchover dialog, click Start Switchover.
  8. You return to the High Availability Switchover tile, with a spinner showing the switchover in progress. The owner of the event broker service also receives notifications by email about the switchover progress. You can view detailed information about the switchover progress by clicking View Logs.
